Audio Scrubbing — Manually Moving the Read Head

Normal playback moves through an audio buffer automatically. With scrubbing, your hand controls the read position directly.

Remember DAT/tape shuttle? Scrubbing and shuttle controls let engineers search recordings by moving through the material at variable speed. Digital audio buffers let us recreate the same useful—and very recognisable—relationship between read direction, read speed and pitch.

1. Load audio and grab the waveform

Click to place the read head. Click and drag to scrub. Move right for forward audio; move left for reverse.

2. Scrub controls

MOUSE POSITION → BUFFER POSITION → SHORT WINDOW → OUTPUT

The browser repeatedly plays short, faded pieces around the cursor. This is very close to a tiny granular process, except you choose where the windows come from.

3. Direction & Speed map to playback

MOVE RIGHT → FORWARD   |   MOVE LEFT → REVERSE   |   SPEED → PITCH & VOLUME

Scrubbing is useful for repeatedly examining tiny events — edits, transients, breaths, clicks and timing details.

Teaching model: this demonstrates the principle rather than copying any particular DAW's proprietary scrub algorithm.

4. The bigger connection

AUDIO BUFFER → CHOOSE POSITION → READ SHORT REGION → WINDOW → OUTPUT

A familiar DAW tool is another example of deciding where, when and how stored samples are read.
